About CueBack

I founded CueBack with my son because I’m a huge believer in the value of education. I’m a first generation scholarship student myself. I grew up very poor, living in government housing (made from that building material of the future - asbestos!) I would not be where I am today if I didn’t have the opportunity to attend university.

After listening to many people in Advancement, I realized there were a lot of similarities to the relationship-selling that I have decades of experience with. Even things like a ‘creating a culture of philanthropy’ have a direct counterpart in the for-profit world (we call it ‘building a sales culture’ – a critical component for building scalable, predictable and efficient revenue/gift generating operations.

Here’s a peek into my background:
  • A major gift donor. I’ve also been on the end of the major gift fundraising process – I know what it took to change what would have been a $5,000 donation into a six figure check. I know what went through my head. Seeing it from the other side also gave me insight into what’s really important when cultivating major donors..
  • A gift officer equivalent. I have decades of relationship-selling experience over long sales cycles, primarily multi-million dollar software to Wall Street, global banks, and governments.
  • A VP of Advancement equivalent. I have experience managing teams of for-profit gift officer equivalents. People who have to do relationship-selling over long cycles to meet a quota.
  • A Baby Boomer I’m also the target demographic for the majority of major gifts and planned giving. I don’t have to guess how that demographic likes to engage; I live it.

From my own experience and from getting insights from experienced front-line gift officers, it’s clear to me that fundraising is underappreciated and misunderstood by people who have never done it themselves. Many people in technology think you can be automated. After almost three decades in Silicon Valley, I understand the tremendous things that technology can do – but I also know what it can't do. It requires a skilled fundraiser to cultivate and nurture a prospect, especially as you move up the gifting pyramid. There is no substitute for an Advancement professional.

Arnie Papp

Co-founder & CEO

Arnie is a serial entrepreneur with experience in the full startup lifecycle from pre-funding to post-IPO. Prior to co-founding CueBack, Arnie was a member of the senior management team at Calypso Technology that grew the company from 20 to 500+ employees and revenue from $2mm to $200+mm with no external funding or debt.

Before Calypso he was VP Sales at GlobalSight Corporation, a content globalization software startup he co-funded with Draper Fisher Jurvetson. From 1992 to 1997 Arnie was a member of the senior management team at Infinity Financial Technology from pre-funding (Sequoia) to post-IPO (NASDAQ: Goldman Sachs Lead).

Arnie lived in Japan from 1986 to 1997 and speaks fluent Japanese. Arnie holds a Bachelor degree in Business and a Masters degree in Japanese Studies from the University of Western Australia. He is also an active Angel investor with pre-IPO investments in Facebook, Arista Networks, Ring Central and others.

In a prior life, he backpacked around the world by himself for 2 1/2 years.

Daniel Papp

Co-founder & COO

Daniel has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Information Systems with a minor in Computer Science from California Polytechnic State University. Through his studies, Daniel has accrued a GPA of 3.95 and 4.0 for Information Systems and Computer Science respectively, as well as an understanding of practical multi-disciplinary concepts that he applies to his work in CueBack.

Outside of academics, Daniel has gained experience as an Eagle Scout, and as the former President of the Cal Poly chapter of a business fraternity, which was recognized as having the top philanthropy programming in the nation over more than 350 other chapters. Daniel was born in Tokyo and speaks Japanese. He also managed a campus-wide event at his University that raised over $5,300 to provide more than 177 Ugandans access to clean water. In a current life, he has traveled to 36 foreign countries.

Bruce Grant


Bruce is a Silicon Valley veteran with over two decades in marketing, strategy, business development, and sales in software, fintech, and digital media. He has worked in Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the US, building global marketing functions that scale rapidly and work seamlessly with sales to drive revenues and growth. He has held senior roles at high growth valley tech innovators including Infinity Financial Technology, Opus, and Calypso Technology.

Bruce co-founded digital marketing agency New Beach Media, a leading innovator in integrated digital media and marketing, Spearmaven, a software tech firm specializing in strategy, business development and marketing for B2B, B2C, and B2B2C software businesses, and Skuff TV, Australia’s leading independent action sports and lifestyle brand.

Passionate about film and its power to shine a light on important social and cultural issues, he currently serves on the board of Open Eye Pictures based in Marin County, California. Bruce holds a B.Com from UNSW and an MSc./MBA from London Business School, where he is also a Sloan Fellow. Bruce lives in San Francisco.

Steve Buchanan


With decades of experience in software development, Steve’s involvement with CueBack has been crucial from its inception. Steve specializes in complex architecture, scaling/managing multi-disciplinary development teams; hiring/mentoring/growing teams, supporting sales, building & executing product road-maps, delivery of high quality complex products under tight deadlines, extensive hands on design & development, Big Data, Java, and C++.

Previously, Steve previously served as the Director of Engineering for Calypso Technology, a leading global application software platform for derivative and treasury market products.

J. Travis McDearmon

Travis is a fundraiser, writer, researcher, teacher and strategic thinker. For the past 15 years, Travis has worked in non-profit and higher education advancement including roles in major gifts, annual giving, planned giving and donor relations. His 2011 dissertation, Assessing Dimensions of Alumni Role Identity and the Relationship to Institutional Support Behaviors, brought forth a new and exciting way of understanding the discrepancy between why some graduates interact with their alma mater and others simply walk away. This work has led to multiple publications and new research avenues giving nonprofits worldwide a better understanding of the socio-psychological motivations behind philanthropic giving and how we can continue to foster new charitable activity in the future.

Travis has his doctorate in Higher Education from the University of Kentucky and is an adjunct faculty member with the Indiana University Lilly School of Philanthropy. Travis’ work has been published in Research in Higher Education and the International Journal of Educational Advancement. He also regularly publishes advancement related articles on his own site and with partnering organizations. When he’s not working, Travis can be found traveling the world, exploring new hiking trails, or hanging out on the couch with his wife and their cats.

Bob Finnell

Bob has over 30 years of experience in counseling rapidly growing private and publicly held technology companies. He has served as Chief Legal Officer of Calypso, General Counsel of Ventaso and as Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel of PeopleSoft. Prior to PeopleSoft, he held national and international counsel roles at Ingres and The Wollongong Group.
